Why isn't my diamond pickax mending when the orbs hit me? I have tool in hand

I watched videos and I'm doing exactly what they say and my ax is Not Mending when I am close to or far away from the orbs. I have it in my right hand when I get the orbs. It was working for less than a week on this one seed I'm playing and it just stopped  :(

Do you mean experience orbs? You aren't supposed to mend with those, but if you are in the latest version you should be able to find an enchanted book (Probably after a lot of searching) called "Mending", craft the same tool and put them together in an anvil (Heals completely) or put the source of the tool in an anvil with it (Ex. Diamond pickaxe - Use a diamond; Doesn't mend completely, but helps). Hope this helped!
