my minecraft 1.8 won't update to get new features, etc?

i am considering re-installing minecraft. i have

a premium account & i am not getting the most cuurent updates/ features. what is the best way to do that?

Yes, that is the way. Completely uninstall your old minecraft and download the new one from minecraft.net. Then just login with your username/password and you should be updated
