How do I get a Mojang Username? Register only asked for my email

I made a Mojang account. It asked me for email, password, name and birthdate and security questions. Now I can log into that account on mojang.com. But to play minecraft I need a username. I can't find a username, and I can't see any way to make one. How do I get a username to play minecraft?
