if you die and stay on the respawn screen will your items still despawn during that time

Question

I recently died in a world while I was in the nether. when I died I did not click respond or main menu right away. did my five minutes to go get my items before they despawn already start or will they start when i load the word again?

If you die and don't click 'main menu' or 'respawn' and pause it. The game should still be running in the background. If you didn't get to it in time. Then its most likely gone to the world. if you load the world again, it will not come back
