On the current version, do animals despawn if they aren't in a fence that's 20x20?

I keep getting conflicting answers when I look this up, and most of the time the answers are old and potentially outdated. If you could even point me to the exact version that a particular change occurred, that would be even better.

If the version is 1.8 then no it dosent.I really hoped this helped. :)
