Is there a place where my kids can play the basic minecraft together?

My kids both have a minecraft account and have been playing in survival mode.  They want to be able to play in this mode together.  I don't understand all the "gamer" language and I am just trying to figure out if there is a way for the two of them to play together in the same world.

Yes that is possible - You can find a sutiable Minecraft Server on that list. Note down the IP and port - use the button on a server page (Click to Join this Minecraft Server)

 

In Minecraft, simply click Multiplayer -> Direct connect -> Enter the IP:Port and connect

 

Do this from both computers and your kids can play in the same world together.
